Considered the ancestor of thewatercolor, the wash is a technique that requires only one color (monochrome) that is diluted to obtain different intensities.
The superposition of layers or the mixing of pigments offers a wide range of tones, light or dark.
The wash was used in China as early as the 6th century. This pictorial process then traveled to Japan (sumi-e) and Korea, before arriving in the West during the Renaissance.
Some famous artists like Rembrandt, Poussin, Victor Hugo... appreciated the wash for the study of chiaroscuro.
This technique teaches us delicacy and poetry while inviting us to the spontaneity of the gesture, in search of the right balance between meticulous details and thick vigorous lines.
